Memories of the White House by LBJ’s daughter
Luci Baines Johnson and Katy Rogers discussed first ladies and traded stories. Luci Baines Johnson is the daughter of President Lyndon B. Johnson and has lived a life of public service. White House correspondent Katie Rogers has worked at The New York Times since 2014. Rogers has traveled the world covering two presidential administrations, writing extensively about domestic policy, foreign policy and the complicated dynamics of first families. “American Woman” is her first book.
Luci Baines Johnson spoke about her duties as “first daughter.” She joked that she was told by LBJ that “he cannot go to be with all of his supporters” and was sending her on a multi-state tour when she was in her teens. She laughed that “Back then, I did not realize that I was being put to work!” She quipped that although her father was a great believer in civil rights, that she started working for free since the age of two to help her father achieve his political goals. Luci shared many sweet stories of her mother with the audience.
